CCCU Student Placements

Goodbye and Good Luck

9th July 2022

Today is the last day any of our student placements are working with us.

We would like to say a very big thank you to all of them this term for really engaging with our children and young people and helping the charity to continue to provide excellent services. Their support has really impacted the delivery of our Early Intervention Pre-Schooler and S-Club sessions, allowing even more of a hands-on approach (with the six extra hands they provided!)

Our Education Lead, James Hanley says it best:

“They truly are fantastic people. They have thrown themselves into the thick of it and built-up brilliant relationships with the children and young people. All are very creative and will be sorely missed!”

21 Together has been very pleased to work with Canterbury Christ Church University to provide student placements to First Year Speech and Language Therapy students and we hope to have more in the future.

But for now, to Rebecca, Rhiannon and Lucy we say:

“Goodbye and Good Luck!”

Mid-Term Update

13th June 2022

Find out what our Speech and Language Therapy Students have been up to this term.

Speech and Langauge student Lucy with a young person from S-Club

Lucy - S-Club

Learning to express their opinions and better understand their own identity is key for our young people. Lucy has been supporting the team with activities to support this. This activity initiated conversations with the young people as they chose images based on what they enjoy doing and what ambitions they have.

James, the Education Lead had the following to say about Lucy’s input so far:
’I am very pleased with Lucy’s contributions to the S-Club sessions. She has many innovative and original ideas, makes amazing resources and has developed excellent relationships with all the young people.’

Rebecca - S-Club

There’s no learning without fun. Becky plays cards to focus on skills such as; turn taking, social chat, being a good sport and numeracy skills.

James, the Education Lead had the following to say about Becky’s input so far:
’Becky is a lovely, calm presence in S-Club. She has worked closely and effectively with some of our most complex young people and is wonderful team member, admired by everyone.’

Rhiannon - Early Intervention

O is for Octopus!

Rhiannon has been working with our 2 year olds to support their sound production.

Meet our Student Placements

30th May 2022

21 Together is excited to announce that we are currently working with Canterbury Christ Church University to provide placement places for their First Year Speech and Language Therapy students to gain so hands-on, real-life experience.

Those of you with children and young people currently accessing our services may have already spotted our three new additions around the building.

Lucy and Rebecca are in S-Club gaining valuable insight into smiLE therapy and the teaching of communication and skills for life to the 11-25 year-olds attending the group. Whilst, Rhiannon, has joined our Pre-schoolers in the Early Intervention Service where she will gain knowledge by working with the team including our specialist teacher and supervising SLT, covering topics including literacy, numeracy, self-help, and social-emotional skills.

When asked why they chose 21 Together to complete their placement and what they have seen so far, here is what they had to say…

Lucy: “I’m very excited to be spending my 1st-year placement as a Speech and Language Therapy Student at 21 Together and I can’t wait to get to know everyone. I’m very much looking forward to getting involved with the smiLE therapy programme and I’m really interested to see how it can make a difference to the lives of young people with Down’s syndrome.”

Rebecca: “It has been a fantastic opportunity to learn how the staff at 21 Together work with young people with Down’s syndrome and their families, the commitment the charity has to support good communication and skills for life, striving to give every young person a voice.”

We hope you will join us in following their placement journey and wishing them every success in their future. Who knows… somewhere down the line we may be working with them!
