From Quiet Corners to Centre Stage

How Dreamland and 21 Together Helped Our Young Adults Shine

Everyone ready to see Sam Ryder!

Attending a concert is a thrilling experience that most people can take for granted. However, for many young adults with Down’s syndrome, the bustling environment of a gig can be daunting.  Thanks to the incredible generosity of Dreamland, who donated VIP tickets to see Sam Ryder and an exclusive, private hut, and the unwavering support of the 21 Together staff, this became an unforgettable night for our young adults.

The Challenge of Sensory Overload at Concerts

Live music events are marked by their vibrant energy, pulsating sounds, flashing lights, and crowds—a sensory feast for most, but a potential overload for others.

For individuals with Down’s syndrome, who often have heightened sensory needs, this environment can quickly become overwhelming at first. This can mean that they don't get the opportunity at all, because people assume it's too much. (Just look at the Assume I Can campaign to see what we mean!)

The 21 Together Team Assumed They Could: So, They Did!

Recognising these challenges, and with help from the Dreamland team, we provided a quiet space, where our young adults could manage their sensory needs. This allowed them to step away from the noise whenever they needed, making the experience both enjoyable and manageable.

The 21 Together team played a crucial role in guiding our young adults through the evening. They started the night with a gentle approach, ensuring everyone felt comfortable and safe. For many, this was their first concert, and the team’s support was essential in helping them navigate the unfamiliar environment.

Initially, our young adults watched the concert from the back, cautiously absorbing this new experience. The familiarity of the VIP space and the reassuring presence of the 21 Together staff provided a secure foundation from which they could explore. As the night progressed, something magical happened. The combination of a supportive environment and the infectious energy of the live music began to work its charm. What began as timid, cautious observation from a distance quickly evolved.

Step by step, they moved closer to the stage. Their confidence grew as they became more comfortable with the sights and sounds around them. By the middle of the concert, they were no longer the quiet onlookers at the back. Instead, they were right at the front, dancing and pulling their best moves.

The private hut, initially a refuge, now served as a launchpad for exploration and fun. It was a beautiful sight—seeing them immerse themselves in the music and enjoy the same thrilling experience as their peers.

Celebrating Success and the Power of Support

This night was more than just a concert. It was a testament to what our young adults can achieve with the right support and accommodations., and their ability to thrive when given the chance.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We extend our deepest gratitude to Dreamland for their generosity and for understanding the unique needs of our young adults. Their thoughtful contribution made this night possible and memorable! We also want to acknowledge the 21 Together team for their unwavering support and dedication.

Together, we created a night where our young adults didn’t just attend a concert—they lived it, celebrated it, and made it their own.

Join us in celebrating this success and supporting more inclusive experiences for everyone! 🌟
